I would think that this is the product code, so either the MPID or the NDC.

When I was reading the SPL Implementation Guide, there was no guidance on what to put in the Product part. On page 7-8 of the SPL R5 IGuide, they don't even show the product, as the role is probably being asserted for all products. I would assume that if you wanted to assert "I'm the importer of these specific products", that you would use the Product association and then it would still be an MPID or NDC. But I'm quite hazy on where exactly you would use a PCID, so it could be the case that you identify parts of a product that the organization is responsible for using the PCID. I really wish the SPL IGuide was clear on this.

Peter, my role at Infoway ends this week. Although I'll still be on the forums, I won't be monitoring them as often as I do now. Your SPL questions are nice puzzlers for me, but I'm not sure how many others in Canada are using it since it is not a widespread Canadian standard. You might want to ask your questions at the HL7 International level - either on the Pharmacy mailing list (This email address is being protected from spambots. Does anyone know instances or cases when this element includes links to the PCID rather than to the MPID or NDC code? I believe MPID linking is the norm but wanted to ask if I am missing anything.

The xpath to remove ambiguity is:
/document/author/assignedEntity/representedOrganization/assignedEntity/assignedOrganization/assignedEntity/performance/actDefinition/product/manufacturedProduct/manufacturedMaterialKind

Thanks in Advance,

Peter
